How can essential oils be used in skincare?

Well your skin is the largest organ in your body and it works to help protect your body in many ways. It protects against extreme temperature and sunlight and acts as a moisture barrier. Its protective barrier prevents harmful chemicals entering the body and the antibacterial substances it produces help protect against infection.

Harmful chemicals and free radicals in the environment can help to cause imbalances in the skin and can promote premature skin ageing.

As skin ages collagen and elastin in the dermis begins to breakdown which can lead to a loss of firmness and elasticity in the skin. Ageing skin also leads to the loss of fatty tissue, which helps to support the structure of skin. This makes the structure of skin thinner and the appearance of blemishes more apparent.

The balance of the skins own natural oil sebum can also become affect as skin ages, an imbalance that can cause dry skin.

The good news is there are many precious oils that help to combat the signs of ageing skin. They can help to nourish the skin with vitamins, antioxidants and essential fatty acids, strengthening the structure of skin and promoting repair and renewal of skin cells.

Essential oils are very powerful concentrated natural oils and care must be taken when using them. They should be diluted in a carrier oil before applying topically to unbroken skin, a dilution of 2% is normally advised. It is advised to carry out a test patch, if there is redness or reaction within 24 hours then usage of that oil would not be recommended.
